Since broad-spectrum products provide protection from UVA as well as UVB radiation, Dr. Neil Fenske says it is more important to use a sunscreen with broad spectrum than with an SPF higher than 15. Chemically absorbed sunscreens that are classified as broad spectrum contain UVA filters such as avobenzone (Parsol 1789). After extended exposure to sunlight, however, avobenzone becomes unstable and, therefore, less effective. That's why Dr. Fenske believes two recent advances in sunscreen protection are so important: HelioplexTM and MexorylTM SX. Helioplex, a compound available in certain sunscreens, stabilizes avobenzone and another UVA-filtering compound called oxybenzone, making the sunscreen's UVA- and UVB-absorbing ingredients more effective. Mexoryl, which was recently approved by the FDA, provides the most effective coverage against UVA light and is currently exclusively found in La Roche- Posay Anthelios sunscreen. Dr. Fenske recommends that people who experience extensive sun exposure such as roofers, road workers and lifeguards use physical barriers such as zinc oxide, which he adds is no longer the thick white cream of years ago. He suggests a product consisting of micronized zinc oxide mixed with titanium dioxide, a UVA filter. The product forms an even barrier to reflect radiation before rays can penetrate the lower layers of the skin.
