Fruits & Vegetables: When To Buy Organic

Healthy Cancer Diets Include Fresh Fruits and Veggies

Q: For which fruits and vegetables should I buy organic?

A: According the American Dietetic Association, research shows that nutritionally there is no evidence that organic produce is better or safer than conventionally grown produce. Organic foods differ from conventional foods only in the way in which they are grown and processed.

Fruits & Vegetables With Highest Pesticide Content

The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit agency that evaluated the results of reports published by the USDA and FDA, released a report listing the 12 highest pesticide-containing fruits and vegetables. This list, known as the "Dirty Dozen" includes:  Peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, imported grapes, and pears.

Fruits & Vegetables With Lowest Pesticide Content

The 10 fruits and veggies that contained the least amount of pesticides were: Onions, avocados, frozen sweet corn, pineapples, mangoes, frozen sweet peas, asparagus, kiwi, bananas, and cabbage. But keep in mind, whether they are organically grown or conventionally grown, the benefits of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables outweigh any potential risk from pesticide residue for cancer risk reduction.
