In 2006, Miles for Moffitt held its first event on the campus of the University of South Florida (USF) to raise money for cancer research at Moffitt Cancer Center. The race started a tradition that, in six years, raised more than $805,000, making this a signature fundraiser vital to helping Moffitt researchers in the their quest to help prevent and cure cancer. This year, we expect to reach the $1 million milestone in funds raised for cancer research at Moffitt.
The Seventh Annual Miles for Moffitt, now with PNC Bank as title sponsor, will be held on May 12, 2012. Participants can choose to run or walk the 5K, 5-Mile or 1-Mile event. For the extremely motivated, there is a companion event - The Ultra Miles for Moffitt - where athletes will complete 50 miles, beginning April 29 at 8 p.m.
Whether you're a walker, running enthusiast or an ultra-runner, Miles for Moffitt is truly a community event. Race Founder Karen Dalton, wife of Dr. Bill Dalton, CEO, president and center director of Moffitt Cancer Center, envisioned this day as one where anyone can achieve his or her personal goal, while knowing that participation advances Moffitt's mission "to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer."
By participating in any of the races, you can make a difference in the lives of so many who experience cancer. Whether you are a cancer survivor or know someone touched by the disease, your entry directly benefits the efforts of Moffitt's young investigators. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors like PNC Bank; the Tampa Bay Rays; Gerdau; Amgen Breakaway from Cancer; USF; the St. Petersburg Times; tbt*; 10 News; Embassy Suites Tampa - USF/Near Busch Gardens; Mix 100.7; US 103.5; Greenberg Traurig; Waste Management; and the Berkman Family Foundation, race expenses are covered, which allows every penny of your registration fee or donation to benefit Moffitt's cancer research programs.
While the race committee enjoys putting on this race, it's the community of volunteers, sponsors, board members, race participants, patients and their families who truly make the event happen by believing in Moffitt's purpose. We'll see you on May 12, 2012.
Thank you for your support!
