Just as every person is different, with a different fingerprint, every tumor also is different and has its own molecular profile. We know that cancer can be classified by its site of origin (lung, breast, colon, prostate). But there are different types of each of these cancers. Right now, we treat most cancer patients with standard treatments. But not all patients with the same kind of cancer benefit from the same drug. That’s why physicians at Moffitt have pioneered the Total Cancer Care study to develop what is called “personalized medicine.”
Working with other health care organizations and research institutions across the state and nation, Moffitt is leading the Total Cancer Care initiative to learn more about the genetic makeup of cancer tumors. It’s the largest study of its kind in the world, designed to discover, translate and deliver personalized medicine – matching the best treatment to individual patients based on the unique genetic makeup of their tumors.
By studying a tumor’s molecular profile, scientists will be able to predict response to standard treatment and eventually develop new drug therapies that are personalized for each individual.
When you arrive at Moffitt you may be asked to participate.
