UVA and UVB Facts

Are you curious about the differences in UVA and UVB? Here are some interesting facts.

UVA

  • Long wavelengths measuring approximately 320 to 400 nm
  • Accounts for up to 95 percent of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth
  • Major contributor to skin aging and wrinkling; it may also be involved in the development of skin cancers
  • Can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin
  • Present year-round, even in winter
  • Penetrates clouds as well as windows and glass

UVB

  • Middle range of UV with wavelengths between 290 and 320 nm
  • Responsible for sunburn, tanning and redness
  • Primarily penetrates only the top layer of skin, the epidermis
  • Intensity varies depending on season, geographic location and time of day
