UVA
- Long wavelengths measuring approximately 320 to 400 nm
- Accounts for up to 95 percent of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth
- Major contributor to skin aging and wrinkling; it may also be involved in the development of skin cancers
- Can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin
- Present year-round, even in winter
- Penetrates clouds as well as windows and glass
UVB
- Middle range of UV with wavelengths between 290 and 320 nm
- Responsible for sunburn, tanning and redness
- Primarily penetrates only the top layer of skin, the epidermis
- Intensity varies depending on season, geographic location and time of day
