We Need Your Help.
Due to our aging population, sun exposure, and cigarette consumption, Florida has the 2nd highest incidence of cancer in the United States. In 2010 more than 100,000 Florida residents received a new cancer diagnosis and more than 40,000 Floridians died of cancer. More than 1.5 million people in the United States were diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and more than 500,000 Americans lost their lives.
State Senator Ronda Storms and Representative James Grant have filed legislation (HB 123/SB 342) that would use revenue from state cigarette taxes to help Moffitt Cancer Center construct new cancer treatment and research facilities in Tampa.
This project could create thousands of jobs in health care, medical research and related industries in Tampa Bay. It could also address a critical need for patient care and research, using proceeds from the sale of tobacco to fight cancer.
Everyone with a stake in the economic well being of our community – and anyone whose family has been affected by cancer – is encouraged speak out in support of this bold prescription for Florida’s economy.
